Tips for gathering evidence to demonstrate your skills

The important thing to remember when gathering evidence is that the more evidence the better - that is, the more evidence you gather to demonstrate your skills, the more confident an assessor can be that you have learned the skills not just at one point in time, but are continuing to apply and develop those skills (as opposed to just learning for the test!). Furthermore, one piece of evidence that you collect will not usualy demonstrate all the required criteria for a unit of competency, whereas multiple overlapping pieces of evidence will usually do the trick!

MSL973027 - Perform techniques that prevent cross-contamination

What evidence can you provide to prove your understanding of each of the following citeria?

Prepare for sampling or transfer

  1. Check the sampling procedure conforms with the required sampling plan
  2. Use specified personal protective equipment (PPE)
  3. Prepare the work area for safe and effective sample workflows
  4. Select equipment and materials specified by the procedure
  5. Organise equipment to minimise contamination during manipulations
  6. Label containers for clear identification
  7. Record details in relevant log or database
  8. Macroscopically assess media and/or reagents to confirm integrity before use
  9. Protect the integrity of the sample source
  10. Perform transfer while minimising opportunities for contamination and/or cross-infection
  11. Protect the integrity of the sample source and destination after transfer, and before sealing the transport or culture vessel
  12. Perform quality control checks to confirm contaminate-free transfer was successful
  13. Label transport or culture vessels for clear identification

Maintain work area and equipment to prevent cross-infection and contamination

  1. Place disposable and reusable items into relevant receptacles
  2. Clean, disinfect and/or sterilise work area and equipment after use
  3. Transport disposable and reusable contaminated materials to relevant areas for disinfection, sterilisation and cleaning or disposal
  4. Follow personal hygiene procedures
